California State Fair 2011

It’s that time of year again!  The California State Fair will be at Cal Expo from this Thursday, July 14 through July 31.  You’ll find all your favorite fair foods and and rides, plus some great exhibits and entertainment for the whole family.

Looking for a way to make the Fair more AFFORDABLE Kids Days are Tuesdays, July 19 & 26.  All kids 12 years and under receive FREE admission.  On top of that, there will be $1 carnival rides for everyone until 11 p.m!

This year’s Big Bug theme should be fascinating for kids!

Ever wonder what it’s like to be a bug? Well, here’s an exhibit that will shrink you down to bug-size and help you see insects for the miniature marvels they really are. Have your picture taken with a giant ladybug or a Black Widow. Get up close and personal with giant robotic insects, including a gigantic locust, praying mantis and caterpillar! Are you brave enough to handle a scorpion or tarantula? If so, Insect Encounters is the place to give it a try!

Outdoor Exhibits that look fantastic:

California Ranchland
Learn more about cattle, horses, swine, sheep and goats. Kids can even sit in real saddles, play in corn boxes, paint a horse shoe and even pet a chicken!

Children’s Dairy Center
Kids will be able to milk cows and goats. The Children’s Dairy Center also contains an educational display regarding the care and maintenance of dairy.

Livestock Nursery
You can see baby animals and may have an opportunity to witness an animal being born. The animals are monitored around the clock by practicing veterinarians and veterinary science students from U.C. Davis.

On the second Kids Day, July 26, your kids can dance and sing with Choo Choo Soul, featuring Genevieve, from the Disney Channel at 1 and 4 p.m. for free!

Have fun!

My love for exploring and creating experiences with my three kids led to the founding of SacramentoSidetracks.com in 2009. I realized that Sacramento has so much to offer and I was excited to share my findings with other parents. Besides simply having fun, these are the other positive side effects of taking my kids on outings that I’ve discovered: we have quality time together away from the distractions at home, we cultivate our curiosity, learn new things, conversations are triggered by what we see and do, we connect and bond as a family, and we create new memories. Ready to get sidetracked, too? Let me be your guide!
