Frankenstein at B Street Theatre

3 Things my kids learned on the way to see Frankenstein:

  1. Frankenstein is a novel written by Mary Shelley.
  2. Frankenstein is actually the name of the doctor who created the monster.
  3. Frankenstein’s monster was originally not the towering green-skinned creature they are used to seeing.

Isn’t it great when an outing can be fun AND educational?

Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein is the current Family Series’ show at B Street Theatre. We have had such wonderful experiences at B Street Theatre, that we attended in full confidence that we were in for a quality production. We had so many questions about what this show would be like as we waited for it to start, though! The kids noticed in the program that the cast consisted of only five actors and they did not recognize the character names. I shared that I had been told that this adaptation of the story would be a play within a play. We were curious how this would be pulled off and who we would be watching!

As the play started, things became clear very quickly. Mary Shelley, beautifully played by Megan Wicks, alternated between narrator and her role as the author seamlessly. The story began with quick wit and humor as the characters bantered their way into a contest for who could create the best ghost story. As Mary told her story, the actors slipped back and forth from talking about the story and portraying the Frankenstein story. This talented group was so smooth that it was always very clear which character they were in the moment!

This show is recommended for ages ten and up but a younger child can handle it, in my opinion. There were parts that made us jump but nothing too scary. My seven and nine-year-old sons enjoyed it just as much as my twelve-year-old daughter and her friend. They all seemed to follow the story and in their words, the “old-fashioned language”. The kids all raved about how wonderful the show was and talked details all the way home. The girls, being young performers themselves, had nothing but compliments for each of the actors’ professional and inspirational performances!

My love for exploring and creating experiences with my three kids led to the founding of SacramentoSidetracks.com in 2009. I realized that Sacramento has so much to offer and I was excited to share my findings with other parents. Besides simply having fun, these are the other positive side effects of taking my kids on outings that I’ve discovered: we have quality time together away from the distractions at home, we cultivate our curiosity, learn new things, conversations are triggered by what we see and do, we connect and bond as a family, and we create new memories. Ready to get sidetracked, too? Let me be your guide!
