Talk about an adventure off the beaten path.  Dominic Staiti from Citrus Heights had the opportunity to travel far from home to compete as a finalist in the Red Robin Kids Cook-off Competition Thursday in Denver!  His Jalapeno Cornbread Chili Burger, as he puts it, is a “cowboy classic”.  I would seriously order it off a menu…it was that delicious!  A cornbread bun, barbecue sauce, deep-fried jalapenos, and onion straws are the ingredients he and his family came up with while eating dinner together one night at Red Robin.  Dominic and his brother told their mom to call and enter but none of them really expected to end up with an all-expense trip to Denver, prizes, and a chance to have that unique burger on the menu.

I was thrilled to have been asked by Red Robin to go along as a correspondent for Dominic’s hometown.  It was so fun to watch as he worked in the kitchen with a Red Robin chef putting his burger together and wrapping it up in true Red Robin fashion for the judges.  Then when it came time to build it in front of an audience, he was so brave!  The emcee asked this adorable 8-year-old questions while he was quickly trying to assemble his burger and he really gave it his all in an intimidating situation.  I was impressed.

In the end, a 12-year-old from Kansas named Donovan won the competition with his Mount Vesuvius Burger that had a home-made “lava sauce”.  His burger will be on the Red Robin menu in 2011 and proceeds from the sale of it will go to the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children.

Although not the grand prize winner, Dominic walked away knowing he had beat out thousands of entrants across the country as one of the 10 finalists…and that was pretty special!  After the event, a wiped out Dominic and I were fortunate to be interviewed live by KCRA.  You can see the video by clicking here.  The whole experience was just awesome and one that both of us would do all over again!

My love for exploring and creating experiences with my three kids led to the founding of SacramentoSidetracks.com in 2009. I realized that Sacramento has so much to offer and I was excited to share my findings with other parents. Besides simply having fun, these are the other positive side effects of taking my kids on outings that I’ve discovered: we have quality time together away from the distractions at home, we cultivate our curiosity, learn new things, conversations are triggered by what we see and do, we connect and bond as a family, and we create new memories. Ready to get sidetracked, too? Let me be your guide!
