“Workin’ 9 to 5” was stuck in my head as I anticipated seeing the Dolly Parton movie come to life on the 24th Street Theatre stage opening night. I have been a Dolly fan since I was a kid (are you with me?!) and knew I’d love the show’s songs that were written by her. The upbeat music and hilarious story were even better than expected and made for a perfect girls night out with a couple friends and my mother-in-law. We did not expect to laugh so hard!
9 to 5: The Musical opened last weekend and is playing through January 27th. Runaway Stage Productions and its full-sized orchestra put on quality shows filled with wonderful talent from our own community! I was impressed with all of the voices and the energy the cast put into their characters.
Based on the movie, 9 to 5 is about three women who concoct a plan to get even with the “sexist, egotistical, lying, hypocritical bigot” they call their boss after he pushes them to a boiling point. The friends team up to take control of their company and the series of accidents are quite a crack up. This is a story of friendship and girl power in a “man’s world”.
These ladies were fabulous!
We were quite surprised at the end of the show when we realized that it ran 2 1/2 hours and yet we were whisked through it by the high energy numbers and enthusiastic cast. My mother-in-law and I commented on how much fun you could see the cast was having in the closing number. That is something that can truly be felt and appreciated by the audience. So if you’re looking for a chance to escape, reminisce, and laugh out loud…here it is!
