It’s PAINT time! On Friday, I took my youngest to the I MADE IT! Studio in Elk Grove as a special treat after getting his first pair of glasses. 🙂 After perusing the huge selection of pieces (many of them just for kids!), he finally settled on a baseball bank and car bank. He sat at one of the cute work stations, “ordered” his colors from the color wheel, and got right to work.
He did a great job on his own, but the owner is very attentive and always willing to share tricks of the trade or help with more difficult projects. She taught him the “dot trick” to decorate his artwork, and even took him on a little tour of the firing kilns in the back!
I Made It! isn’t just about ceramic painting, either. Another project they offer is fused glass art. We haven’t had the opportunity to try this yet, but the examples decorating the shop are incredible. I have so much fun walking around and admiring the works of art while my kids work on their own creations!
This is one of the more expensive outings we’ve featured on the blog, but this can be a GREAT opportunity for your child to explore their creative side AND take care of a Christmas, birthday, or Mothers/Fathers Day gift for someone in the family. We try to come up with a homemade “grandparent” gift every year, and last time around I was running low on ideas. I Made It has saved the day! They had several examples on display that incorporate hand or footprints into festive works of art like this one….
How stinkin’ cute is that??? I’m already thinking about coming in before November to make these with my kids.
Be aware that you will need to leave your creation at the studio for about a week for firing. You will get a call when it’s ready. My son is so excited to give his pieces to his cousin and best friend!
Cost:
$6.00 paint fee for kids 12 and under, plus cost of ceramic piece (most kids’ pieces run around $14.00)
$9.00 paint fee if over 12 years old, plus cost of ceramic piece.
