A story of strength and inspiration

What a fabulous “girls day”! My friend Kristy and I, along with our 9 and 10-year-old daughters, went to see B Street Theatre’s Family Series show, The Conductor: Harriet Tubman and the Underground Railroad. Dare I admit that our girls expected it to be simply educational…and maybe a little boring? Any previous thoughts were immediately changed as the talented actors drew us in and the story intrigued us from start to finish!

The Conductor brings to life the story of Harriet Tubman who was born a slave and dreamed of freedom. After making her escape, Harriet realized that her own freedom was not enough and so became a conductor on the Underground Railroad. She devoted her life to helping others make the journey out of bondage. She was the legendary “Moses,” delivering hundreds from the desert of slavery.

I have to say that Sacramento is lucky to be graced by the talents of Atim Udoffia, who plays Harriet Tubman. She spent the past decade performing on the stage and screen in Los Angeles and is a graduate of Stanford and the London and International School of Acting. When I tell you B Street Theatre is filled with quality talent, I mean it! I was mesmerized with her commitment to the portrayal of Harriet. Equally impressive, were the six actors that depicted many characters with amazing energy and personality!

I expected an educational experience…not an emotional one. I fought back the tears as I gained a deeper understanding of the injustice of the times and individuals’ pain. I have a feeling the girls and my friend went into the day with the same attitude I did, that we are going to have a fun time being together at a good show, but we came away with much more! It was wonderful to hear our girls review the thoughts and emotions that this performance provoked within them. I am sincerely thankful to the cast and crew for bringing the story to life for me and will continue to enjoy it as it replays in my head.

My love for exploring and creating experiences with my three kids led to the founding of SacramentoSidetracks.com in 2009. I realized that Sacramento has so much to offer and I was excited to share my findings with other parents. Besides simply having fun, these are the other positive side effects of taking my kids on outings that I’ve discovered: we have quality time together away from the distractions at home, we cultivate our curiosity, learn new things, conversations are triggered by what we see and do, we connect and bond as a family, and we create new memories. Ready to get sidetracked, too? Let me be your guide!
